I’ve shared this story before with you and I love it so much that I felt compelled to share it again. It’s soooo good and with this week’s theme being priorities, I believe we should all make living the Law of the Garbage Truck a priority.

The Law of the Garbage Truck

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport.  We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of the parking space right in front of us.  My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches!  The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us.  My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy.  So I asked, “Why did you just do that?  This guy almost caused an accident and sent us to the hospital!”  This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, “The Law of the Garbage Truck.”

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks.  They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, full of disappointment and rage.  As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on you.  Don’t take it personally.  Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.  Don’t pick up their garbage and spread it to other people in your life, whether at work, at home, or to people that you don’t even know on the streets.

Always remember that good people do not let garbage trucks take over their day.  Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so… “Love the people who treat you right and forgive and pray for the ones who don’t.”

I love love this story about the Law of the Garbage Truck! This totally reminded me of my husband. On our drive to Los Angeles yesterday, I shared with him this post I found on FB. They are a list of 7 items of what Psychologists say and they all start with “If a person…” this and that (does it too much or less it means something). The 7th item says, “If someone becomes Angry over silly or petty things, it means he needs Love.” I told him I started praying for the gift of Love for him (he knows exactly what I meant Lol) 🙂 It’s something he is aware of…we are all aware of. Before I found this FB post, I’ve always see through these mad people with rage as unhappy people. Something in their life is making them unhappy. It’s sad, because most people can only see the ugly outside, when they are simply “missing something beautiful inside.”. Lol, sometimes when I come across one, I ask them a question in my mind “why are you unhappy today? What’s in your mind?” 🙂 It works all the time with my husband when I throw him this question—I guess I hit it right on. He snaps out of it (even without responding to my question) 😀 I can understand because I catch my own emotions once in a while when something is bogging me down—I get irritated easily. I just snap out of it immediately—I don’t like the yucky feeling! I can totally relate to the taxi driver—it’s very rewarding in the end by living the Law of the Garbage Truck—you gain nothing but PEACE by smiling & waving 😀
